THE FIRST AGE OF SUPERPOWERS

When the modern age of superpowers began in the 1930s, scientists scrambled to try and discover the cause or causes of the sudden upsurge in superhuman abilities across the world, and in the light of this sensational turning point in human history, many of the researchers began to re-evaluate the ancient myths and legends about gods, heroes that had previously been dismissed as fanciful stories from a less sophisticated time.

With the re-emergence of the Atlanteans in 1941 following their centuries of undersea isolation, long-lost knowledge of the ancient world was able to confirm many of the theories about a first age of superpowers. Unfortunately, in the destruction of Atlantis, much was lost, and even more was forgotten in the desperate struggle to survive after the cataclysm, so the exact nature of the first age of superpowers remained a mystery, along with the event or events that triggered it, and the reasons for its decline.

By the mid 20th century, 2 main theories had emerged - the first held that the superpowers of the ancient world had evolved naturally in some form, from one or more cases, and that they had also gradually declined in the same fashion – the main evidence for this were the superhuman abilities of the Atlanteans, which, it was argued, had survived because of their isolation from the rest of the human population, leaving them immune from the gradual decline in superpowers throughout the rest of the world.

The second theory contended that the first appearance of superpowers has been a sudden event, and that they had disappeared just as abruptly – the main evidence for this was the sudden reappearance of superpowers in the 1930s, as well as myths such as the Ragnarök of Northern Europe, and the cycles of destruction and rebirth present in Hindu and Aztec traditions, all of which were cited as proof of a violent end to the first age of superpowers.

Recently, a number of hybrid theories have emerges, either postulating a gradual evolution of superpowers, followed by a sudden decline, or an abrupt emergence, followed by a slow decline. But for proponents of any of the theories about the first age of superpowers, along with those seeking to explain the reasons behind the return of superpowers in the 20th century, the key to greater understanding lies in searching out and discovering the lost secrets of the ancient world wherever they are to be found.

THE ATLANTEAN-LEMURIAN WAR - 10,000 BC

For Atlantis and Lemuria, the two great powers of the prehistoric world, conflict was inevitable – both were vast island realms, Atlantis lying in the Atlantic, Lemuria lying in the Pacific, and the two peoples were great seafarers. However, that was all they had in common – while the Atlanteans sailed from their island home as explorers and bringers of knowledge to other tribes, the Lemurians were driven by a desire for conquest and power over all others, and where the Atlanteans practiced magic drawn from the sea, land and sky, the Lemurians gave themselves over to black rites in honor of their high god Mu.

But the greatest cause of strife between the two nations arose from envy – for the Atlanteans were a superhumanly strong race blessed with long life, and the blood of the gods themselves was said to run in their veins, while the Lemurians were no more than normal mortals, although their sacrifices and blood-soaked rituals in honor of Mu were carried out in the hope of receiving the same gifts as the Atlanteans had received.

When the war broke out, both sides predominantly used magic, as it was far more powerful than their armies – and it was this overwhelming magical assault from both sides that triggered the collapse and sinking beneath the waves of both their realms, although from the ruins of each island continent a handful of survivors managed to save themselves and salvage something of their lost lands. For the Atlanteans, this was the preservation by magic of part of their capital, Poseidonis, which formed the foundation of a new undersea city, and for the Lemurians, it was the volcanic island of Muaroa, the most sacred place in their whole empire.

After such a cataclysmic fall, both powers faded from history, by design as well as circumstances - for the Atlanteans believed that the Lemurians had all perished, and resolved to shut themselves away from the world in their new city beneath the ocean to avoid the envy of other races ever sparking such a conflict again, while the Lemurians believed that the Atlanteans had been utterly destroyed in the disaster, but they themselves were now too few and too weak to conquer the world by force of arms or magic, and so they passed into the shadows to work unseen and in secret for the same goal of world conquest, using and manipulating those that came after them to slowly rebuild their power and influence.

It wasn’t until 1941, when the Atlanteans ended their long years of isolation to aid America and her allies in the war against the Nazis that the Lemurians became aware of the survival of their hated enemies. Shortly afterwards, Selchis, the leader and immortal High Priestess of the Lemurian remnants entered into an alliance with Baron Skorpio, seeing the power of Skorpion as a new weapon to use against the Atlanteans and their new allies.

It is this alliance with Skorpion that has revealed to the Atlanteans that their ancient enemies also survived the prehistoric cataclysm, and that the final chapter of their millennia old conflict is yet to be written.
